Floor care products, manufactured by companies including Lithofin, Fila, HG and LPT, contain a variety of ingredients which have been tried and tested to produce the most effective results possible. The concentration of chemicals in cleaning solutions will depend upon the use and application method for the product. A cleaner designed to remove floor wax from porcelain stoneware (e.g. Fila PS 87) will not be the same strength as an acid descaling product for terracotta (e.g. Fila PH Zero). Despite their similarities, it is highly unlikely that the ingredients within two products, designed by different manufacturers for the same purpose, will contain the same chemical formula. It is therefore essential that the health and safety information for each product is read, understood and acted upon before the cleaning chemical is used.
Some cleaning chemical companies, like Fila, have made a conscious decision to create products that show more respect for the environment. Fila’s Green Care project looks to improve the entire production process, usage and disposal of waste to have less environmental impact.
Even though some floor care products are not classified as hazardous, with any chemical certain steps must be taken to ensure the health and safety of both the person using it and those people in the immediate area. If possible, exclude others from the area you are working in and ensure that others are made aware of slip hazards once the work is complete.
Cleaning care products must always be kept out of the reach of children. Choose cleaning chemicals which are supplied in containers with child safe tops. Remember to replace bottle tops immediately after adding the cleaning chemicals to their receptacle and check that the top is screwed on correctly. Floor cleaning chemicals must always be stored in their original container, as they will be properly labelled with health and safety information.
Wear suitable protective equipment when using cleaning chemicals – some require only gloves, other products may call for eye/face protection as well. If a floor care chemical is splashed into the eyes, rinse them immediately with lots of water and get medical advice.
The
application of chemicals to strip existing finishes from floors may affect asthmatics
or those with chest or breathing problems cause discomfort and may affect, it
is therefore advisable to avoid the areas while this work is being carried out. When using solvent-based cleaners indoors,
it is important to ventilate the room completely both during use and while it
is drying – open windows to prevent the build up of fumes in the room and take
regular breaks while applying the chemical to allow you to get some “fresh
air”.
The majority of floor care products and maintenance items need to be stored where they will be protected from frost and some require a place at room temperature (e.g. waxes). Some may be flammable, so care must be taken to position them where they will not be exposed to increased heat (e.g. direct sunlight) or naked flames. Some flammable chemicals may be unsuitable for use with machines and used cloths should be made wet with water and disposed of.
